Celebs' divorce attorney recommends mediation

Couples going through a divorce, or even anticipating the end of a marriage, may assume that divorce is inherently contentious and conflict is inevitable. While it is true that divorce is never without stress, the process does not need to involve a surplus of strife. In Texas, parties to a divorce have the option of divorce mediation as an alternative to going to court.

One top attorney for many celebrity divorce clients recently recommended mediation as way to get divorced without excess damage. The lawyer, who has represented many A-list stars in their divorces, recently penned a book on the topic of divorcing without harming one's family or finances. As many mediation-trained attorneys know, divorce will alter family relationships as well as money matters, but it does not have to wound them.

While divorce court is a very appropriate option for many couples, many other couples find the prospect intimidating or even overwhelming. In mediation, couples are encouraged to work together, rather than against each other, to come up with solutions that work best for the entire family unit. An array of issues can come up, from property division to child support. Other divorce-related concerns, such as spousal maintenance, contested divorces, and child custody can also be addressed in the deliberately solution-oriented atmosphere of mediation.

If both parties to a divorce are committed to working together as best they can under the circumstances, mediation can also cut time and costs from the divorce process. However, an experienced family law attorney is usually parties' best resource for finding out more about mediation and whether it is an appropriate option for them, their families and their finances.
