Bigamy allegations add curious twist to Houston divorce case

A surprising claim emerged last week in a divorce filing involving a Houston, Texas, police officer: the man's wife was not his only spouse. According to the man's now-former wife, he left her and got married to a different woman without bothering to get a divorce.

In fact, the divorce papers the woman filed were served to the officer at his home on the other side of town, where he was living with another woman. He allegedly told his neighbors about that the woman he was living there was his wife and that the couple had gotten married about six months ago.

The woman who was the officer's first wife also said in her filing that the man told her that his marriage with her was never valid. In the divorce papers, however, the woman says she and the officer were married in August 2010 and began living apart in May 2011. A check of records in Harris County, Texas, confirms the marriage and indicates that it was performed by a church officer.

If the bigamy charges are proven, the officer's job on the force could be at risk. So far, however, no criminal charges against him have been filed. Internal investigators for the police department may determine if there is truth to the claims of his recently divorced ex-wife.

While claims of bigamy are certainly unusual in this day and age, many divorces may bring up other unpleasant facts or allegations. An experienced divorce attorney can help keep the process on track and in the best interests of the client.
