Mediation can help spouses get through holidays productively

Going through a divorce is stressful; doing the same thing during the holiday season can be massively overwhelming. For many spouses in the Houston area, it may be tempting to hold off on any divorce-related activity until after the new year. Still, postponing the act of dealing with problems may backfire in some cases, as resentment builds and is compounded by holiday stress.

For some, divorce mediation may be a way to get a handle on one's divorce process as one year transitions into another. Mediation uses a trusted, professional third party to steer couples in a productive direction and keep the focus on resolution. During mediation sessions, divorcing spouses will discuss their issues, plan progressive steps towards problem-solving, and reach solutions that benefit the evolving family unit.

In addition to constructive conflict resolution, mediation promotes efficiency since the environment is deliberately non-contentious. Many couples actually save money by pursuing mediation rather than traditional litigation, since court costs do not grow and grow as protracted litigation continues. Finally, mediation provides a learning-oriented atmosphere in which the benefits and drawbacks of decisions can be explained calmly and thoroughly. Former couples often emerge from mediation with a renewed sense of empowerment over the direction of their family's future.

While the holidays are indeed exceptionally stressful, the end of the year may not be an inappropriate time to move forward. The end of one chapter and the beginning of another puts matters into perspective, and helps families create new resolutions for the eras ahead. With the help of a local mediation professional, Houston spouses can move into the new year knowing they're being proactive about what matters most.
